The new feature made by the most distinct representative of the Romanian New Wave, the screenwriter and director Cristian Mungiu, depicts the story of a reputable doctor in a provincial town and his daughter, a victim of a sexual assault, which serves as a vehicle for his posing the most weighty of ethical questions.

How to act vis-à-vis complex, ambivalent situations? What should we actually tell our children about the world we are living in and its strange rules? Through everyday moral dilemmas, Mungiu’s psychological study leads to an indictment of the entire system, as it also presents a mental portrayal of a disillusioned, resigned generation. A comprehensive, multilayered drama, Graduation was one of the highlights of this year’s Cannes festival: coupled with the actors’ astonishing performances, the adroit direction and brilliantly structured screenplay resulted in a smart, profound analysis of family relationships, as well as the contemporary

society of compromise.
