Plastic China

Plastic China

HDCS/ES
Director:Jiu-liang Wang
Length:82 minutes
Genre:Document

International Competition

Director: Jiu-liang Wang

Ten-year-old Yi-Jie cannot forget her native village. Like many uneducated villagers in China, her parents had to look for work hundreds of kilometres away from home. They eventually found themselves in a small plant for the recycling of plastic, which is collected in China from the countries with the largest consumption. The huge mountains of rubbish become a paltry source of income for the adults and a place for the children to play their games. Cast off inflatable balloons and broken dolls are sad messages from the developed world, embodying its lustre and the opportunities that Yi-Jie and her friends will never know. The chances of Yi-Jie someday going to school are becoming ever more remote as her father drinks what little he earns from the recycling plant. The film follows closely the individual stories that are played out among the heaps of plastic waste and testifies with every shot to the social inequalities and paradoxes of globalisation.
