He learned to lecture without notes, managed to recognise students by their voices, had scientific literature recorded on tape, and then realised that in order for blindness not to defeat him, he must understand it. Professor of Theology and Religious Studies John M. Hull had visual problems since childhood and finally lost his sight completely at the age of 45. He published his reflections on what it means to be blind, the beauty of cognition and the limits of interpersonal relationships in a book, which is now presented in audio-visual form by the film makers Peter Middleton and James Spinney. In this moving film with elements of docudrama, Hull, who in the 1980s kept an audio diary, is allowed to speak for himself. Among other accolades the film won the award for Best Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards. An interactive version of the film will also be presented at One World 2017.
