Last Men in Aleppo

Last Men in Aleppo

HDCS/ES
Director:Feras Fayyad
Length:104 minutes
Genre:Document

Director: Feras Fayyad

Syrian director Feras Fayyad captured the day-to-day efforts of White Helmet volunteers, who throw themselves into the city’s bombarded districts to search for signs of life in the ruins.

Syria has been in the grip of civil war for eight years. Cities have been ruined; millions of people are on the run. People who have become trapped in the war zone are also helped by rescue workers from the Syrian Civil Defence Forces, better known as the White Helmets. These volunteers find themselves caught in a vicious cycle – after the bombings, they go on desperate rescue operations as quickly as possible, followed by moments of rest filled with conversations about the future and waiting for the next air raid. The film follows three volunteers – Khaled, Subhi, and Mahmoud – as they deal with an eternal dilemma: Should they escape and save themselves and their families, or stay and help others? The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival in 2017, the main prize at CPH: DOX, and a number of other awards.
