HDCS
Director:Raoul Walsh
Cast:James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O’Brien, Margaret Wycherly
Length:113 minutes
Genre:Drama, Crime

Director: Raoul Walsh  •  Scenario: Ivan Goff, Ben Roberts  •  Cast: James Cagney, Virginia Mayo, Edmond O’Brien, Margaret Wycherly, Steve Cochran

In character of Cody Jarrett, leader of the criminal gang, James Cagney found the ideal vent for his raw intensity, for which he had been known since his acting debut in The Public Enemy (1931). Jarrett is dangerous, violent, psychotic, paranoid, but also surprisingly fragile and vulnerable, which is reflected in his unhealthy fixation to his mother who is the only creature in the world he truly trusts. Jarrett’s ostentatious breaking the laws eventually leads to the famous spectacular finale, during which he presents one of the most cited quotes in the history of Hollywood film: “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” Director Raoul Walsh, a crime and action film expert, has helped Cagney with the remarkable acting performance. Walsh’s swift and straightforward style is a guarantee that the film with a rather generous footage does not bore the viewer. (Milan Hain)
