Reconstructing Utøya

Director:Carl Javér
Premiere:15. March 2019
Length:98 minutes
Genre:Document

Director: Carl Javér

How can one reconstruct something so terrible? By means of an intimate theatrical experiment, several survivors attempt to depict the attack on the Norwegian summer camp in 2011.

In the middle of a dark empty warehouse a performance takes place without props and scenery, where characters move between lines marked on the ground. What begins as an anonymous and neutral space takes on the power of memories of particular shapes. The attacker's presence seems to materialise, and the young actors, following the instructions of eye witnesses, start to feel the danger and horror themselves. The experiment brings catharsis for the survivors, who become directors of their own nightmares, and gives others the chance to understand, at least for a moment, what the victims of the attack went through and are still going through.
