Most of the heist noir films of the 1940s and 1950s emphasize the precise planning of the robbery and its execution. However, Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs are breaking down these conventions from the very beginning, while we watch the thieves at a meeting, but instead of preparing for an upcoming action, everyone is just chattering. Who wouldn’t remember the enthusiastic interpretation of Madonna’s song Like a Virgin by Mr. Brown portrayed by the director himself? After this typically Tarantino dialogue overture, a sudden leap comes to the consequences of a failed robbery that we will never actually see. Mr. Orange is shot and with Mr. White and Mr. Pink they are waiting at an agreed place for the rest of the gang, which is shattered as the story itself. The subversive shifting timeline explaining the relationship of characters Tarantino also used later in the cult film Pulp Fiction (1994). /Jana Bébarová/
