Cast:Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, Margaret Lindsay
Length:98 minutes
Genre:Drama

Director: Fritz Lang  •  Cast: Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, Dan Duryea, Margaret Lindsay, Rosalind Ivan

In a film trilogy linked by a central actress, Joan Bennett, Fritz Lang dropped the social criticism and focused his attention on the theme of repressed love desire. In particular, there were film noirs such as The Woman in the Window (1944), Scarlet Street (1945) and Secret Beyond the Door (1948), to which can be added the later made, wrongfully neglected Lang noir House by the River (1950). In the first two, Joan Bennett was supported by actor Edward G. Robinson in the role of an older man living in an unsatisfactory marriage to a dominant woman, from whom he runs into the arms of a sensual and mysterious femme fatale that brings excitement and unrecognized passion to his stereotypical life. Because of her, he becomes entangled in murder and his peaceful life turns into a nightmare. As in many other 40s films, the influences of psychoanalysis and freudism are also reflected here. /Jana Bébarová/
