Mourning in Lod Mourning in Lod

When Moussa's wife calls her husband, he promises her that he will be home soon. On the way, however, the Palestinian man stumbles into a street fight. As cellphone footage shows, the unarmed Moussa falls to the ground after being hit in the chest. The shooter is holding a gun in one hand and an Israeli flag in the other. He walks free from court, claiming he killed in self-defense. During the riots that erupt in Lod after Mousa's death, a Jew living in the neighbourhood, Jigal, is also killed soon afterwards. His family is also deeply affected by the loss, but decides to donate his organs posthumously. Jigal's kidney goes to an Arab woman named Randa, who undergoes difficult dialysis. The vicious circle of Israeli-Palestinian violence seems to be closing, but the lives of the affected families will never be the same. Show more

20 Days In Mariupol 20 Days In Mariupol

Ukrainian reporter Mstyslav Chernov and his colleagues risk their lives to report the truth about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They are the only team of foreign correspondents*women to provide first-hand accounts of war crimes during the siege and occupation of the city by the Russian army. For twenty days, they have been trying to send footage from the closed Mariupol, showing dying children, mass graves and the bombing of a maternity hospital. The media has refused to publish many of them. It is footage that no one wants to see, but everyone should see. The film shows not only the situation of ordinary people in war, but also how difficult it is to document the reality of war. Show more

Slow Slow

Even though their work is connected to physicality, everyone perceives their body differently. Elena enjoys sexuality and is not averse to random erotic experiences, while Dovydas does not need sex and physical contact to live. Thus, the film alternates between the different phases of their relationship, from the initial casual acquaintance to the building of intimacy together without sex to arguments and other difficulties. The film is not only the story of Elena and Dovydas, but also a general reflection on themes such as open relationships, partner stereotypes and expectations. Thanks to its original theme and sensitive treatment, the film won the directing award at Sundance. Sultana's Dream Sultana's Dream

Inés is a 30-year-old animator who has just broken up with her partner. In a bookstore, she accidentally discovers Sultana's Dream, a 1905 Bengali satirical novel by feminist writer Rokeya Hosen, which describes an imaginary country where women rule. Influenced by her reading, Inés sets out to make her own film. The filming is intertwined with the story of Rokeya Hosen's life. The final level of the magical-realist film consists of the animated illustrations from the book. In addition to past and present, fiction and reality, various animation techniques meet in this filmic reverie. Inspired by watercolour, shadow theatre or the traditional henna decorating technique, they combine to create a unique visual experience. Show more

Limits of Europe Hranice Evropy

In 2017, when Saša Uhlová tried out low-paying jobs in the Czech Republic, she found that the worst conditions were for economic migrants*migrants from abroad. In the free continuation of the project Borders of Work, she finds herself in their position. She works on a German farm and in an Irish hotel, and cares for the elderly in France. She keeps a diary and records everything with a hidden camera. For her employers, she is cheap and replaceable labour. But the overworked journalist is fast running out of steam. Like other workers, she would rather be at home with her family. But some of them have already resigned themselves to change because they feel they can't do anything on their own. This documentary gives personal testimony to economic inequality and the high price of Western welfare. Show more

Monster Monster

Saori is a single mother living with her 11-year-old son Minato. She notices that the boy has been acting strangely lately. The reason seems to be physical and verbal intimidation by his class teacher, Mr. Hori. However, the school management deflects the accusation with an unconvincing apology and the story is further complicated by the perspective of the accused teacher. Who is the titular "monster" here? This scripted film tells a story of fear, loneliness and friendship from different perspectives, but also of the blind spots that sometimes cause us to make clear moral judgments where the facts are not as clear. Radical Radical

The elementary school in the Mexican border town of Matamoros is not a dream workplace. Crime, corruption and poverty plague the area because of the drug wars. As a result, the school's management places more emphasis on discipline and obedience than personal development. Teachers are exhausted and demotivated. Sergio Juárez Correa is an exception. The charismatic protagonist has no doubts about the potential of children from disadvantaged families. But his teaching method, based on learning about the world through experiments and games, is perhaps too radical for a conservative institution. This drama based on true events won the Sundance Audience Award. Show more

Notes from Eremocene Poznámky z Eremocénu

"This is an account of what happened to the species Homo sapiens on planet Earth, in the Solar System, in the Milky Way galaxy, approximately 13.8 billion years after the supposed origin of the universe." With these words begins the film, which is conceived as a message in a bottle that the artist sends to her virtual future self and to future generations. We live in a world that is developing disruptive technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence at a predatory pace. But at the same time, it faces the rise of undemocratic regimes and the increasingly obvious catastrophe of global climate change and biodiversity loss. This experimental film combines analogue and digitally manipulated footage to suggest the impact of these times on individual mental health and society as a whole. Show more

The Accidental President The Accidental President

The documentary traces the rise of the politician from her decision to run for president instead of her husband, who was imprisoned by the regime, to her forced exile in Lithuania. The pro-democracy campaign that followed helped mobilise thousands of people to take to the streets to demand change, despite the risk of violence. In a juxtaposition of raw footage of police brutality, we see the growth of the Belarusian government in exile and with it the solidification of Svjatlana's role on the world political stage. Alongside behind-the-scenes footage of her advocacy work, Svyatlana's personal accounts are given space, alternating moments of despair with feelings of pride and human belonging. However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 will interfere with her ongoing negotiations with international leaders*. Show more

Invisible Nation Invisible Nation

Director Vanessa Hope has made an official request to film with Taiwanese President Tsai Jing-wen. Not only did the office approve the request, but the crew soon managed to get close enough to the first president to make a film about her two terms in office. During the seven years of filming, Jing-wen was able to strengthen Taiwan's independence and its relations with the US and confront China. But the film is not merely a portrait of a head of state. It tells a story of courage, hopes and dreams and, by providing historical context, conveys the key to understanding the complex situation in a region where world peace is currently at stake. It depicts Taiwan's struggle for international recognition, which means nothing less than the right to the island state's very existence. Show more

The body in my head Tělo v mé hlavě

From an early age, the actors and actresses in this documentary have heard*scurses of various types. Following a call from Czech Television, they are now meeting in a TV studio. The therapeutic safe space gives them the courage to share their emotions and experiences of body shaming. For a while they don't feel they have to hide something, please someone, look a certain way. They talk openly about non-acceptance, bullying, obsession with food and weight, scars on the body and soul. Others have long reduced their identity to a few hurtful expressions. The narrative becomes a means for the protagonists* to give context to these words and weaken their power. Show more
