Sweet Smell of Success

2DCS12
Director:Alexander Mackendrick
Cast:Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner
Premiere:5. June 2021
Length:96 minutes
Genre:Drama

Director: Alexander Mackendrick  •  Cast: Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Susan Harrison, Martin Milner, Jeff Donnell, Sam Levene, Joe Frisco, Barbara Nichols, Emile Meyer, Lawrence Dobkin

“Neither a formally adventurous nor a perfect film, it nevertheless has a strong narrative drive and skilfully manages its various internal tensions. Its style is swift and seductive, its atmosphere slick and sleazy, its mode smoothly oscillating between satire, melodrama and near tragedy.” Thus spoke a film critic and historian James Naremore about Alexander Mackendrick’s film. When Sweet Smell of Success was made, it wasn’t commercially successful, but today it is perceived as the most complex work of the Bostonian with Scottish roots, who was making mostly comedies for London studio Ealing before he came back to the US in the mid-1950s. The script, written by Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets, was inspired by the life of columnist Walter Winchell and it was produced by Burt Lancaster’s independent production company. Lancaster also starred as one of the unforgettable main characters, while Tony Curtis excelled as the other one.
