Patricia Highsmith’s debut novel Strangers on a Train was adapted many times into films, television shows, radio shows and plays. The most famous adaptation is surely the one made by Alfred Hitchcock, which was created just one year after the book was published. The screenplay, co-written by Raymond Chandler, stays true to the basic plot – a random meeting of two men on a train leads to a seemingly perfect double murder – but changes the ending, partly because of the Hollywood self-censorship. The film is impressive thanks to the perfect casting of the main protagonists – the younger one Farley Granger stars as a naive tennis player Guy Haines and the role of a psychopathic killer Bruno Antony became an opportunity of a lifetime for Robert Walker. Unfortunately, the 32-years-old actor couldn’t enjoy the success for long: he died two months after the premiere of the film due to a fatal response of his body to sedatives.
