Pietro is a boy from a bustling Italian town, Bruno is a boy from a forgotten Alpine village. One returns to the mountains every summer with his parents, the other never leaves the hills. They share a love of majestic peaks, a complicated relationship with their own fathers and, in time, thick beards. Just as nature grows, withers, and flourishes again, so too does their friendship change. A loss in Pietro's life takes him back to the countryside after many years, and a reunion with Bruno changes his view of the world. For their adaptation of Paolo Cognetti's book of the same name about the transformation of boys into men, the value of friendship and the search for the meaning of life in the silence of the spectacular Alps or the Himalayas, the directors won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
