An uncommitted young American journalist and an English businessman with ties to the oil industry meet by chance in contemporary Nicaragua while on a mysterious assignment. The two fall passionately in love despite knowing little about each other's true professional identities. They are desperate to escape from a country where the powerful forces there won't let them leave. Based on Denis Johnson's 1986 novel, Stars at Noon is a new positioning for director Claire Denis - a contemporary thriller full of political intrigue and subtle eroticism. This combination suits both protagonists perfectly, especially rising star Margaret Qualley, who gives an electrifying performance on screen full of spontaneity and elemental passion. Claire Denis has chosen an international cast for this film about terror and disillusionment with love - she has cast American actress Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, 2019) as Trish, British actor Joe Alwyn (The Favourite, 2018) as Daniel, CIA agent Benny Safdie (Licorice Pizza, 2021) and Panamanian actor Nick Romano, who was a great discovery for the director. After making Chocolat, Claire Denis is constantly discovering new locations for her work. After filming in Africa and Europe, this time she chose Panama to bypass the Nicaraguan government, headed since 2007 by former Sandanista revolutionary Daniel Ortega.
