Christmas Eve 1944. The life of the inhabitants of an ordinary Slovak town is marked by Nazi repression, which is intensified when a trio of partisans gets among them. The Kubiš family is directly affected by the whole affair, as one of the wanted men is their youngest son Ďurko (Ivan Mistrík). However, the commander of the German unit, the ruthless Major Brecker (Hannjo Hasse), also lives in the house with them. This depressing drama was made by Jiří Krejčík based on the play of the same name by Peter Karvas. The diverse range of characters, portrayed by a superbly assembled ensemble of actors, shows the different attitudes towards the dramatic events in Slovakia in the aftermath of the violent suppression of the national uprising. Also worthy of attention is the soundtrack, which composer Zdeněk Liška has filled with carols and Christmas songs that create a stark contrast to the chilling action on screen.
