Twelve-year-old Samuel lives on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. He spends his days at school and shooting a slingshot. For him and his family, who make a living from fishing, time passes peacefully. The clock ticks in the same rhythm as Italian hits alternate on the local radio. The lazy atmosphere of the streets contrasts sharply with the drama that takes place on the shores of Lampedusa. Over the last 20 years, some 400,000 refugees have sailed here on ships, fleeing war and poverty. Samuel's doctor, whose nightmare task is to examine dead bodies from the flimsy boats, personally connects both worlds that masterful documentary film maker Gianfranco Rosi paints with the conviction of a neo-realistic opus. The film won the main prize at the Berlin International Film Festival 2016.
