Das Filmfest 2016 - Die Doku

Director: Lutz Dammbeck

Nearly universally, game shows are among the most popular programmes on television, and their success does not necessarily depend on the production costs. Coming across a lead almost by chance, filmmaker Lutz Dammbeck searches out the roots and mechanisms of the genre. He was especially interested in the theory that the origins of the TV game show lie in American psychiatry and its influence on re-education programmes developed by Americans after the Second World War in the belief that Germany had gone insane.

The film starts with the idea of permanent revolution in the sense of the great historical Enlightenment, from Voltaire and Rousseau to Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Adam Smith. This revolution, according to a reader that Dammbeck shows throughout the film, “emerges in changing costumes and masks, but always pursues the original ideas.”
