Faces of the City

Director: Matt Tyrnauer

A portrait of journalist, writer and activist Jane Jacobs (1916–2006), who greatly influenced today’s appearance of New York and other American cities – not through any megalomaniacal urbanistic visions, but rather resistance to them and an effort to respect a natural order and a view of the city not from “the sky” but “the street”. For many decades Robert Moses, the head of New York’s urban planning, made changes without any regard for the city’s living structures. Jane Jacobs took up arms specifically against him and opposed his plans, not only in her texts but also in the streets. The film also explores how this overlaps with today’s situation, when rapidly growing economies are repeating the same mistake against which Jacobs fought.
