Western Sahara, a strip of desert south of Morocco, has been disputed territory for over 50 years. A small part is under the control of the Polisario liberation movement, but most is controlled by Morocco, which considers Western Sahara an integral part of its country. The UN lists the territory as not self-governing, recognising neither Morocco’s sovereignty nor the legitimacy of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The indigenous people face restrictions on freedom of speech and assembly and any resistance is harshly punished. They are thus fleeing to neighbouring Algeria, where desert refugee camps line the border. This documentary tracks several young men whose dreams of independence remain unfulfilled and for whom music has become the only means to express their desire for freedom.
