Rudolf, Hedwig and their four children live in a large house with a beautiful, well-kept garden. They celebrate every day with a dinner together, reminisce about their beloved Italy, enjoy weekend trips to the water and walks with friends. However, from behind the walls of their home, disturbing noises and the occasional desperate scream can be heard. Rudolf Höss is the commander of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The story takes place in the home of Rudolf Höss, the commanding officer of the Auschwitz camp.

The zone of interest contrasts the seemingly ordinary life of the Höss family with the horrors that seem to unfold casually on the periphery of the field of vision. There is no need to explicitly show the specific crimes in the excerpt, as the indifference of the Nazi oppressor and his ilk to the nearby suffering is perhaps even more chilling.

Jonathan Glazer's chilling film about the banality of evil took home the Grand Prix at Cannes thanks to its exceptional treatment.

Cinema has already offered us many views of the Holocaust, but this one comes at it from a slightly different angle.
