Premiere:1. February 1990

Genre:Comedy, Drama

Director: Jiří Menzel  •  Cast: Rudolf Hrušínský, Vlastimil Brodský, Václav Neckář, Jitka Zelenohorská, Jaroslav Satoranský, Vladimír Šmeral, Ferdinand Krůta

Jiří Menzel made the film based on short stories from Bohumil Hrabal's book Inzerát na dům, ve kterém už nechci bydlet (An advertisement for a house I don't want to live in anymore) in 1969. For twenty years, the film remained closed in a vault because it told about the absurd reality of Czech society in the 1950s, which was to remain hidden forever. The heavily banned film was not released in cinemas until twenty-one years later, premiering in January 1990. It was only in retrospect that audiences could place it in the sequence of all Menzel's successful adaptations of Hrabal's subjects. The same year, at the Berlinale, the film won the main prize - the Golden Bear.
