Mio is growing up in the Nagano area with only her grandma who manages the local onsen. When the grandma is hospitalised, the rest of the family is compelled to close the spa. As a result, Mio leaves a familiar and peaceful place at age 20 to start a new life in Tokyo. Her father’s friend Misawa Kiyosuke who runs a small public spa offers her a place to stay. The girl is very quiet, just observing and listening to her surroundings most of the time. While she seeks a job, she does not really know what she wants to or can do. The calm environs and hot water in the spa have always been closer to her heart than the noisy company of other people. Despite her shyness, she eventually finds friends. For the first time in her life, she takes up initiative and accepts responsibility, helping out in the public spa. The film takes us to a Tokyo neighbourhood full of tiny restaurants and establishments whose operation was greatly affected by the preparations for the 2022 Olympics. We get to see nooks and crannies of the city that no longer exist. The heroine’s determination to find her own place in an ever-changing environment offers us inspiration for dealing with changes in the elusive world.
