The balance of light and darkness in the world of Earthsea is skewed, people lose their security, they stop believing in themselves and wizards lose their abilities. Plagued by anxiety, the young Prince Aren flees from the royal court under disturbing circumstances. His aimless journey is given direction by an encounter with the archmage Sparrowhawk. On their journey together, Aren meets the girl Thera, who hides a great secret. Aren becomes interested in Krahujc's old adversary, the mischievous mage Spider, reincarnated as a woman, who seeks the secret of eternal life. Fear of death initially drives Aren, like the Spider, to darkness. But the hero learns that the only way to overcome his anxiety is through finding the love of life. The first film by Gore Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki, references one of the most popular sagas in Western literature, Earthsea, and pays tribute to its author Ursula K. Le Guin.
